Abstract

On March 5, 2021, the NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery, one of the world's leading medical journals, published the article “The Devastating Impact of Covid-19 on Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in the United States”. This study reported that intellectual disability (ID) was the primary risk factor for the Covid-19 diagnosis. The authors further showed that ID was the primary risk factor other than age for Covid-19 mortality. Another finding was that individuals with ID had a higher prevalence of obesity than individuals without ID. The present review aims to examine two main findings from the North American study: 1) Covid-19 diagnosis and mortality data among individuals with ID, 2) prevalence of obesity in individuals with ID, and to examine obesity as a potential mediator of mortality among adults with ID.
