Abstract

The aging of people with intellectual disabilitiesis a subject notstudied very much in the
Brazilian literature.Research in this area recognizesthat the aging ofthese people happens earlier
in relation to people without disabilities. This research is an excerpt from a larger study entitled
“Funcionalidade de vida diária das pessoas com deficiência intelectual em processo de Envelhecimento: A visão dos cuidadores” that had as main objective to investigate the comprehension
of caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities in an aging situation, on the functionality at
this stage of life. This article investigated the productions on the theme “aging and people with
intellectual disabilities” and how this has been addressed, from the theoretical foundation of a
research of Scientific Initiation conducted by the authors, in the magazines APAE Ciência and
Revista Deficiência Intelectual. As a result, 18 publications were found between 2011 and 2021.
The studies indicate the lack of public policies that ensure the quality of life of this population,
in addition to the need of offering services that guarantee a better quality of life in old age.
