“Peruaçu: A Path Towards Accessibility” is a project aimed at adapting the PARNA Cavernas do Peruaçu to make it accessible to all visitors, including people with physical, visual,
auditory, intellectual, and/or multiple disabilities, ensuring their right to interact with protected areas. The pilot tour along the Janelão Trail was conducted to identify the challenges that
people with disabilities (PWDs) face in interacting with the park and to test new technologies
created specifically for this project. During this phase, individuals with auditory, visual, physical, intellectual, and multiple disabilities were invited to participate as researchers, guiding us
along the trail and demonstrating their eagerness to enjoy this wonderful experience. They also
highlighted some obstacles that must be addressed to make the experience more complete and
inclusive. It marked a historic achievement in the nearly 23-year history of PARNA Peruaçu:
a wheelchair user and individuals with intellectual, visual, and auditory disabilities completed
the Janelão Trail safely. It is a challenging path for everyone, and these participants showed us
that it is possible and that we must fight to ensure that PWDs are included as rightful members
of our society.
