Abstract

Special education is a right guaranteed by Brazilian legal mechanisms in basic edu
cation and must be upheld in regular educational institutions. One way to ensure this right is
through Specialized Educational Care (SEC) in schools, which involves the assistance of a
specialized professional for individuals with special conditions, including Autism Spectrum
Disorder (ASD). Given the increasing presence of individuals with ASD in education and the
need to develop specific knowledge to support this group, the present study aims to present the
perceptions of legal guardians of students with ASD regarding educational inclusion. Through semi-structured interviews with 42 legal guardians from two public basic education institu
tions in Minas Gerais, the collected perceptions were analyzed using thematic analysis. The
results highlighted four main themes: difficulties in accessing and/or receiving SEC services,
school infrastructure for students with ASD, training and experience of SEC professionals,
and challenges in the social inclusion of students. In this context, improvements in inclusive
educational policies are necessary to ensure that students and their families have access to the
resources required for the appropriate development of children and adolescents in both school
and society.
