(IN)VISIBILITIES OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN THE CONTEMPORARY REGIME OF IMAGES

A RESEARCH REPORT

Abstract

This report shares the research path taken over two years of investigation, regarding the (in)visibility of people with disabilities in the contemporary image regime. The aim is to share the investigative process developed in the research, focusing on the methodological processes involved in the search for data related to the theme of the visibility of people with disabilities in the contemporary image regime. This will enable the public dissemination of the different research phases in a report format. The research was carried out in a constellated format, bringing together and deepening five research movements: a) theoretical incursion, b) integrative literature review, c) historical-film investigation, d) film review, and e) teacher training experiences. In this article, we present the literature review, historical-film investigation, and film review as the main methodological approaches for the work. In these investigative processes, it was possible to understand the presumption of images that make people with disabilities visible and, at the same time, invisible in academic productions, especially in film images, the central object of analysis in the research. The results point to a need for a radically critical social understanding of visibility, which reinforces the positioning of people with disabilities as islands of loneliness or as mere reiterations of narrow narratives of overcoming.
