Abstract

The present work describes a theater activity involving the primary prevention of disabilities, art, and functional activities related to practical and daily life performed by the students. For the primary prevention of disabilities, the APAE in Guaramirim performs several actions to disseminate knowledge to different community audiences. Since 2018, one of the strategies used was prevention theater with CAESP students. They are guided to carry out the tasks with the highest possible level of autonomy, like the scenery ensemble, costumes, makeup, and placing and removing transportation objects. Thus, not only the performance in the play, which involves interaction with the audience, but also all the other activities involved served to develop functional skills and act as cognitive challenges, as they required attention, memory, comprehension, and activity organization with a beginning, middle, and end, among other aspects. Throughout these years, the joy of the students, the involvement of parents, the testimonials of professionals and the students themselves, and the improvement in attention, autonomy, responsibility, and performance of the students, have confirmed this practice as an excellent source of knowledge and skill development.
